Significance of Mauni Amavasya
The term Mauni comes from the word “Muni” which is a seer, one who practices “Mauna” Hence the term Mauni Amavasya is a day of silence to reach spiritual growth and victory over oneself through willpower. Guru Adi Shankaracharya considered “‘Mauna’ as an attribute that must be practiced by saints. Ramana Maharshi, a Hindu Guru also observed that silence is more powerful than thought or speech and asked people to attain self-awareness, calm mind, and self-realization through silence.
Though the whole of the month of ‘Magha’ right from Paush Purnima to Magha Purnima is ideal for the bathing ritual, Mauni Amavasya is considered to be a day when the holy water turns to nectar and can dissolve any sin and wrongdoing for the one who bathes in it.
